Are they twins?

by The Empowered Educator 18 Comments

…..No sorry, they are puppies but we love them anyway! Sometimes in my overtired, cheeky moments this is what i feel like replying when i am asked that question for what seems like the hundredth time during a shopping trip with the girls in the double pram!

As parents of twins we are now used to some silly comments and have learned to take them in our stride but one thing i have never gotten used to is people literally jumping in front of the pram to ask their question and talk to the toddler twosome….i mean i almost run some of these people over !(obviously they don’t understand how stressed a parent of any number of toddlers is when out at a shopping centre with a list of things to get or they would think twice i am sure, hehe)

Most people are just trying to be kind i know but it is odd how you and your children seem to become public property when you are a little different (i can only imagine the looks with higher order multiples!) Of course it is nice to feel special and i am very proud of all my girls…..sometimes though i just like to reflect on how i feel after one of ‘those’ shopping trips so i don’t turn into grumpy mumma!I really do just try to remember to laugh…..these are the top 10 comments i have received regularly since we had the girls and began venturing out….hopefully i can put a smile on your face too!

1. Are they twins? (Always number 1 question, hehe)
2. Are they identical? (You can see them right?)

3. Which one is the good one? (This one is increasing as they get older) Who is the oldest? (who cares?)
4. Double trouble there love (i used to just nod and agree but now i say, no, double hugs and kisses…)
5. They aren’t dressed alike…wasn’t sure if twins or not (hmmm, very rarely are..they are individuals)
6. Who is your favourite? (one day i am going to answer that and see their horrified look just for fun!)

7. One boy and one girl? (Got this alot before 6 months…one lady even said ‘oh that one has blue on when i replied they were both girls!)
8. Was it IVF/did you use fertility treatment? (i really dislike this one as i used to feel i had to give everyone our personal story…and i don’t think it is anyones’ business)
9. Do twins run in the family? (i just say yes now and listen to how many people also have twins in the family…hehe)
10. Are you/did you breastfeed? (This one from people i have never met before and i have never worked out what the ‘correct’ answer is and why they need to know!)

But out of all the comments i receive i have to say my absolute favourite is “double the love or double the joy there!” These people receive the biggest smile ever and i feel so good as a Mum rather than a bit of a freak….so next time you see a mum shopping with her twin pram perhaps try that comment and i bet you are rewarded with a grateful smile!

The toddler twosome and Miss teen had a great time with ‘Slime Play’ yesterday. This is an old favourite from way back and such a great sensory activity for all ages. It’s slimy and gooey, makes a great talking point and is a stress buster!

There are many recipes around i am sure but this is the way i have always made it……

SLIME
3 cups lux flakes(or any pure soap grated)
Around 2.5 litres of warm to hot water (you my need more or less )
Mix together and then i like to leave overnight or at least for a few hours as the mix will go thick and this way you can tell if you need to add more water or more flakes to get the consistency you desire. You can add colour if you want but i like to keep it white (this batch i added glitter to) it washes off easily when time to clean up and will keep in a covered container for quite awhile!
Older children will like to use whisks and egg beaters to froth it up while younger toddlers are usually happy to fingerpaint and squelch with it!
As you can see…we all had great fun outside in the shade with our slime……

They became very interested in taking it off each others hands!

Tara just loved the sensory experience and went in with both hands!

Paintbrushes and dishmops made great patterns in the slime

let’s move the exploration down….

Moved over to the bucket with big Sis and realised it was a whole different experience!

Don’t you just want to get your hands in there?

Thanks for stopping by….have fun!

People can be so nosey sometimes can’t they? If I ever see people with twins I just smile and think how much fun it is to see two people of the same age grow up together. It’s a very special bond to watch.

Love, love slime it’s so much fun playing that with toddlers. It keeps them busy for ages I remember making it for my girls and at daycare:) x

Puppies, Ha! Thats hilarious…You should say it! I have always been very envious of people with Twins and I have to admit I think I am one of those people who do pry and ask silly questions though, (sorry), they intrigued me. I always wanted twins, not the case though…I am even guilty of dressing all my little girls the same occasionally, I think it’s cute!
I can relate to unwanted comments though, having a large family I occasionally get the ‘nothin on TV hey?’ or ‘don’t you know about birth control’…I usually roll my eye’s, and try to say something smart back. ๐Ÿ™‚
I love your Slime, great messy outdoor activity. I’ll have to put some lux on my shopping list.

I know all about this twin thing ( it could have been me writing this post) Sometimes i felt like I should get business cards printed with all the answers! Mine are 16 now like your older girl and we are having fun with getting them both ready to drive – 120 hours x 2 in NSW.

It is lovely watching them grow up together now Catherine, they are really interacting and after having an only child for 15 yrs it makes a nice change to watch!
Awww Lesley…we are trying really hard not to think about driving tests, very hopeful that the 120 hrs will be phased out by time the are up to driving!Good luck…that’s tough, hope you like driving!
GooseJam….You’ve inspired me to say puppies next time!I dress them similar and sometimes the same like at xmas, i’m not fussed either way…at least it’s still easy at this age though!’Nothin on tv’ is a shocker of a comment!!!

Love all of the twin comments! I must say, I’ve asked the “Are they twins?” question— it’s just a way to start a conversation- Though I’ve also gotten about my daughter and son who are 16 months apart!

I just stumbled along your blog from a recipe on Pinterest. This entry was in the “others you might like” section, and I just had to read it. I find it interesting that for DECADES, whenever I see someone with twins in the store, the first words out of my mouth are “How fun!” That usually gets a big smile from the mom. It took me a really long time to realize that I would love to have twins. Meanwhile, I just live vicariously through a friend of mine who has the most adorable set of 7 month old twins. I even get to take them for the day from time to time. ๐Ÿ™‚

I always wanted twins! I haven’t been blessed with twins but I have been blessed with “Irish Twins.” They are 9 months apart. And boy can I relate to all the questions! I even got asked if they were twins when my oldest was 10 months old and the youngest was only a month old. I will NEVER understand how they couldn’t figure that one out. Now that they are older I am getting it more and more. And I will never understand why people think it is their business to know why our kids are so close together. My “favorite” is :”You do know that if you had breastfed your kids wouldn’t be so close together?” Ummm…NOT true. I was breastfeeding when I got pregnant. But that’s a judgement that shouldn’t be made anyway. I hope you have tons of fun with your adorable little girls. Like you said, double the hugs, double the love, and double the fun! ๐Ÿ™‚
