Homemade Furniture Polish

by The Empowered Educator 4 Comments

Just a quick post today as one half of the toddler twosome has been having an awfully clingy couple of days (trying to figure out if behaviour based or coming down with something).

It has meant i haven’t been able to get anything done or literally move from the room she is in without a major meltdown…is this her way of greeting her 2 yr old milestone do you think?!!! We have a busy weekend ahead with the twins 2nd Birthday on Sunday so there are cakes to be made, presents to be wrapped, balloons to be blown and preparations made for a visit from the girls Gran (my Mum).

I have been trying to clean the house across the past few days (due to the little appendage stuck to my leg constantly making everything take twice as long!). Figured i better give the furniture a bit of a dust and polish since my Mummy is coming to visit ( i am sorry to say dusting has been a sadly neglected chore since the twins came along…what a bad housewife i am…it used to be a weekly chore i promise!). I then belatedly realised i had run out of good ol Mr Sheen to polish (or let’s be honest and say ‘remove the thick layer of dust and sticky fingerprints!) with…and i was on such a good housewifey roll too!

I then remembered reading in my travels about others that had tried making their own furniture polish and i had filed that scrap of information in the back of my mind to try ‘one day’. Well…here was that day!

I  played around with a few recipes i have come across in my searching until i had something that i feel is actually working really well (yep i was a little suprised i admit!). Perhaps you might like to give it a try…it is quick, easy and cheap to make with only 3 ingredients needed!

Just 3 ingredients and a spray bottle or jar….what could be easier?
Homemade Wooden Furniture Polish
1/2 Cup white vinegar
(i just used the no frills one i use as a fabric softener)
6 drops lavender essential oil
(or whatever oil you prefer…just make sure it is essential not fragrant oil)
2 teaspoons grapeseed (or olive) oil
I put mine into an old empty commercial polish spray bottle i had previously been using but you could also just put it into a container with a lid and just dab a little onto your dusting cloth. I love to use old teatowels or knit shirts for dusting, i think they do a great job (well…perhaps a little optimistic of me to say ‘love’ ….but i do like to use them when i actually get to the dusting!!)
Let me know how it works for you if you give it a try!

Warm Wishes…

I only do what I can these days and try not to beat myself up about it…the job you are doing with the twins is the most important…not cleaning the house..it gets me down some days when I look around, but then I have to put it into perspective that life is extrememely busy with the children, and they will not remember if they house is dusty…its such a hard call….but one I try to remind myself as often as possible….enjoy that birthday party…I love the age of two…I really do, I never had terrible twos…only tricky threes….x

Such wise words my dear! it’s all about perspective isn’t it? they are pretty good 2 yr olds so far…it’s been 3 days though lol!

I had terrific twos and tricky threes too. I agree with Suzanne, polishing can wait…. But whenever my mum is inbound, that’s when it seems to get done!
