by The Empowered Educator Leave a Comment

Looking for inspiration to run a professional early learning service at home? In this post we’re sharing the perspective and creative spaces from yet another professional family daycare educator in our Empowered Educator community.

I regularly spotlight some of the wonderful work that professional family day care educators do here in Australia and also overseas. We take a peek into their home based early years environments, talk about why they love what they do and even share a few of the unique challenges that only this role offers.

Last month I put the spotlight on Little Mini Lighthouse Family Day Care and this month I’m continuing to highlight some of the wonderful work that professional family day care educators do all around the world.

If you missed last month’s Educator Spotlight you can catch up HERE.

What is your philosophy regarding working with and caring for young children?

I believe in creating strong and trusting relationships with each individual child and providing them with a positive, warm, loving and caring environment where they feel welcome and a true sense of security and belonging.

I believe that children learn best through play, providing them with rich and meaningful experiences and environments allowing them the freedom to imagine, discover, create and explore.

I enjoy providing the children with natural resources and believe that exposing them to nature will enhance a child's social interactions, physical and emotional abilities and challenge the learning styles of children in my care. Nature offers infinite ways to support a child's cognitive, physical and emotional, especially in their first 5 years.

Challenges & Benefits For Early Learning In Home Environments

What is your biggest challenge working in this sector?

I would have to say paperwork. Although much less than in a long day care environment, it can creep up on you if you don't stay on top of it.

What do you feel are the biggest benefits to children attending a family day care service like yours that the community and families might not be aware of?

The natural resources and play based learning. I allow the children to learn based on their own Interests and through their play.

Watching the joy and happiness on a child's face when they achieve something. I love spending my days helping children create wonderful memories together.

What made you decide to work in early childhood education?

I have always loved looking after children, from a young age I would always babysit and help out with family and friends babies and children. After trying various different fields I decided to try childcare and loved it from my first day working in the industry.

What advice would you give yourself if you could go back to your first year as an ECE?

My first year in ECE was amazing! I absolutely loved studying and working. My first year I was an assistant in the nursery and it was such a great learning experience.
