Ditch the cling wrap!

by The Empowered Educator 5 Comments

This week has had to be a slow week for the family as we all came down with the cold that started with the twins on the weekend….in true Mummy fashion i had to look after everyone while sick myself and it seems i am the only one to have developed a really nasty lingering cough and flare up of asthma….i am glad that the rest of the family have escaped this but gosh i could handle a good lie down about now, lol! Why do Mummies not get sick days!!!

What is cute though and reminds me of why Mum's just keep going at times like this is Tara echoing me every time i cough and then smiling at me…..she seems to have the eyes of an older person sometimes i swear!

Wanted to share an easy little sewing activity i completed on the weekend. My poor old machine is still holding up but i fear it won't be too long before i need to scour the second hand ads for a ‘new' one soon! What do you find handy in a machine? This model has only basic stitches but i often ask myself if i would need more when i only sew basic projects anyway…something to continue thinking about but always interested in your opinions!!

For a while now i have been concerned about the amount of plastic wrap we are using in lunchboxes and thought that fabric sandwich wraps sounded like a great idea so started doing a little net research (shame i kept getting sidetracked by new and interesting blogs!!) and found that….

1.They are very expensive to buy…no idea why…they use very little material….popularity i guess?

2. There are many, many tutorials for lunch wraps but many were just too fiddly or time consuming for my liking as many of my projects have to be completed during nap times or they don't happen!

I found this very simple and easy tutorial by Jill on her very creative blog…i so enjoyed visiting her blog and I'm sure you would too….she is also a fellow Aussie so even better!!!

I'm not going to write a tutorial because Jill has explained it so much better than i could and it is her idea of course but i thought i would share some pics of my wraps….i am really happy with how they turned out and they really were just so easy!

I made a few different sizes as His Patient Self usually takes 2 sandwiches and Miss Teen will have one, but homemade bread is often quite bulky so i wanted to make sure they were big enough. This is the larger one at 30cm square. This is a dark blue ripstop nylon on the inside..so easy to wipe away crumbs etc.
Lay your sandwich in the middle….
 Fold the 2 sides in….
Then the sides with the velcro sewn in and fasten tightly….
The blue material i picked up from the remnants bin and i though it would be suitable enough not to 'embarass' a male in the lunchroom!!
Plenty of room in this bag for two sandwiches….
Outside and inside of the fabric i used….
The smaller size is around 27cm square…but really you just cut out what you think would suit your family…i am going to make some smaller ones for cakes and biscuits now….a little bit hooked because i love being able to complete projects so quickly!
Obviously this is only a basic design but i think they work well without the need for fiddly sewing skills and folding. It truly was a 10 minute project!
Have you made any fabric lunch or snack wraps? I'd love to hear how they work for you or your favourite design!

Oh no it’s hard being a Mum and not feeling well, we should definitely get some sick days but alas we just soldier on don’t we? I hope you start to feel better soon Jode. I haven’t made any sandwich wraps but I think they are a great idea. I bought a lunchbox from Biome that has compartments that seal separately so I don’t need the glad wrap anymore. It’s been ages since I’ve bought any which I really like. Your wraps look great, perfect colours for a male too:)

It’s so hard having to look after your family when you are all feeling under the weather, hope you are feeling much better soon Jode ๐Ÿ™‚
Love the idea of these sandwich wraps. Our son’s school has implemented a nude food Wednesday whereby any food they take to school on Wednesday’s is not allowed to be cling wrapped or in packages. It’s such a great initiative that we have started using containers for all his luches now but these would be even better.

I hope you feel better soon, I can sympathise with being ill and still having to be a Mummy! No days off for us. Love the wrap idea – I am pinning it. I am assuming you make a load and just wash them! Great for the environment!
