We have been doing a lot of quiet play and reading of books this week due to illness but we did sneak in some painting in the few days where illness left the building…only to return again though unfortunately! It's hard not to feel helpless as a parent isn't it when you watch your little ones feeling so awful!
Here's the activity we are sharing this week….it fits in with our current focus on shape recognition play.
SCOURER/SCRUBBER CIRCLE PAINTING
I brought these round scourers very cheaply from the $2 shop because I wanted to challenge Ruby with the texture of them. But they also worked well as a shape activity too!
I simply placed a little paint on our trusty sponge stamping pads….showed the girls how to press down firmly and then stamp hard onto the paper…
As you can imagine…they didn't need much encouragement!
The texture is rough and prickly so it was a great sensory activity…Ruby was a little hesitant at first but soon worked up the courage to give it a try!
They also made great swishing patterns when the girls scrubbed them back and forth…they were really pleased with this pattern.
They loved making their special circle patterns though and we did a little chatting about the colours and the circle shapes…and what happened if we pressed harder or softer!
To extend the activity and get them using some different fine motor skills i added the little brush attachment they came with…this allowed them to really use some force and also challenge their hand-eye coordination!
I taped a few sheets of paper to the Outdoor Blackboard as well to give them a different angle to paint at! A little handprinting never goes astray of course!
The toddler twosome really enjoyed this activity and as a bonus we had some lovely prints to hang on the wall!

Well, I know I’d much rather use my scouring pad for painting than for washing up 😉 Another great idea, Jode, thanks for sharing!
