Weekend Wanderings…Vegies and Rock Play….

by The Empowered Educator 7 Comments

Unfortunately there hasn’t been much time for blogging over the past week as the toddler twosome have both been sick with a cough and cold….this has meant not much sleep for Mum at night and very few day naps due to coughing fits!

I think we are all on the mend now so here’s a little glimpse into our weekend and a few days last week…in between wiping endless snotty noses!! Autumn is definitely here in our part of the world!

Taking advantage of the warm sun and blue skies we have spent much of our time outdoors as usual….and rocks seem to have been the most popular ‘plaything’ this week!

There was a little raking and searching for just the right spot and size rock……

And then a little lesson on small, big and bigger using rocks….Ruby loved this game and showing off her discoveries to line up on the ground……such a simple item from nature can provide so many learning opportunities!

Tara preferred to stack her rocks spending a lot of time searching for the right size to fit on top and balance….this was another opportunity for discussion about small and big and what she needed to do to be able to build her tower….

She walked all around the yard building her little towers with just the right rocks comparing shape, size and textures….an ever changing tool from  nature! She turned her attention to trying to find little platforms to build on and counteract the uneven surface of the dirt….a little toddler problem solving in action!

I just can’t resist pics of little toddler feet in colourful boots having fun outside….can’t wait until the landscaping is finished though and we have some grass again….

Often as I watched her on this beautiful morning, Tara would just stop and look over the yard and toward the view beyond…she is such a thinker this girl of mine and sometimes I can almost hear her thinking and planning her play….

There was of course a little family creative fun……more about these budget, sensory activities later in the week!

Gates and fences moved one step closer to completion and became toddler proof…….

The first of our planted seeds became seedlings ready to plant and more trays were planted by the 3 girls with the aim of keeping vegie crops going over the entire Winter.

We now have cauliflower, broccoli, peas, snowpeas, sweet potato, spring onions, lettuce, spinach, rocket, tomatoes, beans, cucumbers and beetroot. There may be more but I have lost track now!

The vegie patch has been turned over and visited by the chooks who loved having a scratch around, compost added, new seedlings planted and mulched.

The toddler twosome have been busy helping me plant seeds, spread mulch and water….they do love their gardening and all the joys and lessons that come with being a part of growing our own food to eat.

The garden hasn’t offered much in the past month as the torrential rains wiped out many of our crops and then the weeds took over and I admit I gave up a little…was like fighting a losing battle when there were so many other things to do.

We have been picking some beautiful sweet pineapples though and stockpiling pumpkins….pumpkin soup will be on the menu soon!

And it has been lovely to watch last year’s Mother’s Day present burst into bloom and colour just in time for another Mother’s Day…this colour is my absolute favourite!

It does stand out as a beacon though reminding me there is still a top garden bed that needs weeding and turning over….perhaps next weekend….
Due to not blogging much there was also a little time spent finishing off sewing projects from last Winter for the toddler twosome….I love their smiles when they try on a dress they have been watching me make….but due to me forgetting to take some photos that will be a story to share another time!

Hopefully I will be back on track with some blogging time this week as I have some fun activities and new recipes to share with you!

I hope your weekend has been restful and full of happy moments…..don’t forget to stop and look at a few rocks this weekend…they truly are magical little things when you see them through the eyes of children!

Warm Wishes…..

Glad to hear you are all on the mend Jode. Your yard is a wonderland for children with so much to see, explore and do.
I never really of there being a downfall to rain but I guess it would play havoc on a garden just as not getting enough does with us.
Impressive looking pineapple and pumpkin though.
