Weekend Wanderings – Teepees, Seesaws and Musical Trees

by The Empowered Educator 15 Comments

The fact that  I am sharing our weekend wanderings with you and it is already Tuesday here in Oz should give you some idea of how my week is going so far!

I'm still trying really hard to fit blogging in with all the extra work of actually returning to work as an educator. I thought about giving it up for a bit but I really do love blogging, it is my escape and hobby …and my time even if it is normally at midnight each night! My apologies if I haven't answered the comment you have left recently, I really do appreciate them and am trying to get there I promise.

This weekend was a bit of a challenge on the behaviour front if I am to be honest…but keeping the girls busy outside did help distract from the wrong clothing, wrong colour drink cup and wrong plate and socks drama. Personally, I needed a glass of wine to ease the aforementioned drama ๐Ÿ˜‰

We did have a productive weekend though with 3 big projects finished…I think we may be working Daddy a little hard but I promise I help too!

There was also a little play with clay….the addition of crinkle cutters, rubber bands and pebbles made for some interesting creations….

It was hot so there was a little jumping in the paddling pool….
And jumping on the trampoline as the sprinkler dropped some cool water and there were shrieks of ‘it got me'…
There was a little clearing in the paddocks…we can see over our back fence again now.
A bit of harvesting from the kid's vegie patch……
And games with the chickens…….
Apparently they don't share Tara's love of hoop rolling or balancing…she was most disappointed!
Indoors the ‘playful preschoolers' (how do you like the new name? Can't call them toddlers anymore really!  Thank you to my bloggy friend for her lovely name suggestion – you know who you are xx) got very busy with their parachute and hiding all their ‘friends'. It was then time for a rest….unfortunately that part was short lived.
I cleaned off our old shoe rack on the verandah and made it into a craft/FDC storage area. I really do love when a plan comes together..so happy with this area!

My lightbulb moment for the weekend occurred when I was feeding the chooks and spied this dead log sitting in the corner. His patient self has grown to dread these moments of inspiration!

Imagine me standing up the top of the hill in the chook pen yelling down to him in the yard to look what I had found….would be perfect for a music tree I said! He looked at me for a minute and I could see the question forming and then he sighed and trudged up the hill to help me bring it down.

I know he doubted me but look what we created!

Just had to get rid relocate our spider friend….was more worried about snakes that might be hiding under there actually!

After a little begging a hole was dug and the log had a new home. I'm sure everyone plants dead logs don't they?

I then enlisted the help of my little apprentice Tara who took the job of putting some of our musical props onto the tree pegs very seriously!
My original idea was to just have the lids and other items for banging hanging off the tree branch bits but I forgot how hard kids can bang and they kept falling off!
So the alternate plan was to add some twine and hang the items from the peg branches…Tara again helped with the arranging…..

And there was much banging (or playing of music) using wooden branches!

The next project was also inspired by a pile of branches we have sitting in the top paddock  (because we want to make something with them of course!). I knew they would be perfect for building a quick and easy teepee….

From humble beginnings….

His patient self made this in under half an hour. Ends were sawed off to give a safer and more even finish to the logs. He then tied some twine around the top once we did a test trial of where we wanted them.
Then it was just a matter of putting it up and splaying the legs to where we wanted them.

The addition of a blanket wrapped around and one of our lovely Ecoviva mats underneath with some pillows created a magical little teepee and the girls were very excited!

This moment was my absolute favourite from the weekend. Ruby went and got her little ‘guitar' and  began playing music to Tara in the teepee because ‘sissy is tired'. Tara had a little turn too but I really love the bottom pics below… a bit like the paparazzi caught her lying down!

After preparing the logs we had some bark left over…it made a perfect little ‘fire' outside the teepee!

The third project was a seesaw. We had a few more chairs left over from our last recycled projects and everytime we go to Bunnings (which is a lot obviously) the playful preschoolers point out the seesaw longingly…I knew Daddy could make a better one for much less money…and he did!

Using wood recycled from the garage (trust me…this guy has everything in his garage), the seats and a coat of leftover exterior paint it actually ended up costing us nothing!

3 budget friendly outdoor projects and some help from the twins…not a bad weekend after all!
Anyone for a picnic?

I saw the tee-pee on Facebook, and fell in love with it. That Music Tree is simply wonderful too. I love coming here for creative ideas, just wish we had the outdoor space (and time) to create them.

What fantastic additions to your yard. I love that you spotted a log and saw a music tree – a place which will inspire so much creative fun. Your playful preschoolers look like they are going to have lots of fun in their new teepee too. Elise @ Creative Play Central

Lady – you have been so busy! Glad you’re still going to stick around this blogging scene – and boy can I relate with your need for a glass of wine after toddler meltdowns about the most ridiculous things…. like which side of the couch they are sitting on (REALLY?!). Love your work and what you’re creating. xoxo P
